Swim with Humpback Whales at Ningaloo Reef

4 hours to 1 day

Overview

This full-day eco-tour out of Exmouth is built around the chance to swim with humpback whales on Ningaloo Reef during the seasonal window from early August to late October. It also includes a morning reef snorkel and the chance to spot other marine life such as turtles, dugongs, manta rays and dolphins. It is a higher-cost, adventure-focused day rather than a casual sightseeing cruise, so it suits confident swimmers who want a rare wildlife experience with most of the practical stuff covered.

Why backpackers love it

If you are travelling the Coral Coast and want a genuinely big-ticket wildlife day, this one keeps the logistics simple. Transfers, gear, food and photos are all included, which saves organising extras in Exmouth. The marine life focus is broad as well, so even beyond the whale swims there is a good chance of getting a packed day on the water. Just be realistic: it is expensive, physically active and best suited to confident swimmers rather than first-timers.

What to expect

Courtesy transfers start from Exmouth accommodation at 9.30am, with return around 5.30pm. During the day, you will head out for a morning snorkel on the reef, then spend time searching for humpback whales with help from an exclusive spotter plane. If conditions and sightings line up, you will enter the water for guided whale interactions. Snorkel gear and wetsuits are provided, and food is covered with morning tea, lunch and an afternoon platter. A free photo package is also included. To take part in the whale swims, you need to be 13 or older and a medium to strong swimmer who is comfortable in deep water without touching the bottom.
