Rottnest Island Grand Tour with Lunch and Historical Train Ride

71 Reviews

4 hours

Overview

This guided tour is a solid option if you want to cover a lot of Rottnest Island in one go rather than piecing things together yourself. Over four hours, it combines a historical train ride, a coach tour around the island and a visit to the WWII Oliver Hill Guns and Tunnels. You’ll also see the settlement, coastal lookouts, white-sand beaches and key landmarks including Wadjemup Lighthouse, with commentary along the way. Lunch is included, but ferry transfers to and from the island are not, so you’ll need to book those separately.

Why backpackers love it

If you’ve only got a day on Rottnest and want to see more than the main settlement, this takes care of the planning and gets you around the island efficiently. The mix of coastal scenery and military history gives it a bit more substance than a basic sightseeing lap, and the included lunch helps keep the day straightforward. It’s better suited to travellers who are reasonably fit and happy with a structured tour, rather than anyone after a slow, flexible beach day.

What to expect

The tour starts with a historical train ride before heading into the Oliver Hill Guns and Tunnels section, where you’ll learn about the island’s wartime history. This part is more physically demanding than the rest of the day, with around 700 metres of walking and more than 240 uneven steps through enclosed tunnels. There are no rest stops and no backtracking once inside, so it’s worth taking that seriously if you’re not confident with stairs or tight spaces. After that, the tour continues by coach through the settlement and out to spots including Jeannie’s Lookout and Mabel Cove, with views over turquoise bays and beaches as you loop around the island. You’ll also hear about Noongar history during the tour.
