Nitmiluk Heli Art Adventure
1 to 4 hours
Overview
This is a higher-end Nitmiluk experience that combines a scenic helicopter flight with a guided visit to a secluded Aboriginal rock art site. You’ll fly over the full 13-gorge system, follow the Katherine River through sandstone escarpments, and see remote parts of the park that are hard to access any other way. After the flight, the experience goes beyond standard sightseeing with an on-ground cultural stop guided by your pilot.
Why backpackers love it
If you’re keen to spend more for something genuinely hard to do independently, this stands out. You get both big aerial views and access to a remote cultural site that few visitors reach, so it feels more substantial than a standard scenic flight. It won’t suit every backpacker budget, but for a shorter stay or a special splurge in the Top End, it packs a lot into one booking. The 24-hour cancellation policy also gives a bit of flexibility if your plans are still moving around.
What to expect
You’ll lift off from the helipad inside Nitmiluk National Park and head out over the entire gorge system. Along the way, the route takes in views of Jedda’s Rock, Butterfly Gorge, Lily Ponds and the 8th Gorge cascades, plus other waterfalls deeper in the park. From the air, you may also spot wildlife such as crocodiles and buffalo in more remote areas beyond the 13th gorge. The helicopter then continues further into the landscape before descending at a culturally significant Aboriginal rock art site. Here, your pilot leads a guided walk around ancient rock faces and shares insight into the stories and continuing cultural presence tied to the area. A moderate level of fitness is recommended, and it’s not suitable for travellers with spinal injuries.
