Overview

This guided day tour gives you a solid introduction to Alice Springs and the landscapes just outside town. It combines local history with time in the West MacDonnell Ranges, so you get more than a simple scenic drive. Along the way, you’ll visit Simpson’s Gap and Standley Chasm, hear stories about Central Australia, and stop at key local sites including the Telegraph Station. On weekdays, the tour also includes entry to the School of the Air. Transport is by air-conditioned coach, with pick-up and drop-off from selected hotels.

Why backpackers love it

If you’re short on time in Central Australia, this is an easy way to see a mix of outback scenery and local history without hiring a car. Hotel pick-up keeps the planning simple, and the guided commentary helps add context to places that might otherwise just be quick photo stops. It’s better suited to travellers who want a structured sightseeing day than a rugged or independent hike, but it covers a lot in one trip and works well if you want to get beyond town without sorting your own transport.

What to expect

The day starts with hotel pick-up in Alice Springs before heading out with your guide into the West MacDonnell Ranges. You’ll take a guided walk at Simpson’s Gap, known for its high cliffs and the chance to spot rock wallabies among the ranges. There’s also a visit to Standley Chasm, where you can walk between striking sandstone walls. Back in town, the tour covers more of Alice Springs’ story with entry to the historic Telegraph Station, the site of the first European settlement here. If you’re travelling Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays, the itinerary also includes the School of the Air. Bring enclosed walking shoes, warm layers in cooler months, and a fly net in summer if you want one. You’ll also need to pre-purchase an NT Park Pass online, which is not included.
