Kata Tjuta Sunset Tour and Valley of the Winds Walk

3 Reviews

6 hours

Overview

This afternoon tour combines one of the Red Centre’s best-known walks with a sunset finish at Kata Tjuta. You’ll be picked up from your hotel and driven into Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park with an accredited local guide, who shares the geology, history and cultural significance of the 36 domes along the way. The main draw is the Valley of the Winds walk, followed by canapés and Australian wine as the sun goes down.

It’s a good option if you want more than a lookout stop and are keen for a proper guided hike. Just be aware this is a physically demanding walk, not a casual wander.

Why backpackers love it

If you’re in Uluru for a short time and want a more active option, this covers a lot in one trip: transport, guiding, the main walk and a sunset finish. The hotel pick-up makes planning easier, especially if you do not have your own car.

It also suits travellers who want something a bit more substantial than a standard sightseeing tour. The walk is the real focus here, so it’s better for fit backpackers who are up for the effort and want scenery with a bit of challenge.

What to expect

After hotel pick-up, you’ll travel by air-conditioned coach to Kata Tjuta for an afternoon guided tour. As you approach the domes, your guide explains how the landscape was formed and why it matters culturally.

From there, you’ll head out on the Valley of the Winds walk, around 5 to 5.4 kilometres, following creek beds and tracks through the rock formations. The national park rates this walk Grade 4, so a high level of fitness is needed. You’ll need to bring 2 litres of water, sun protection and a valid national park ticket, and sturdy walking shoes are required.

After the hike, the pace eases off with light snacks, sparkling wine or Australian wine, and sunset views over the outback. The tour returns to your hotel about an hour after sunset.
