Full-Day Sailing Trip to Rottnest Island from Fremantle

3 Reviews

8 hours

Overview

This is a full-day sailing trip from Fremantle to the waters around Rottnest Island, rather than an island visit on land. You’ll spend the day on a 12.5m catamaran with a small group of up to 24 guests, stopping in some of the island’s bays for swimming and water activities. Snorkelling gear, shared kayaks and SUPs, marine park entry, morning tea and a buffet lunch are included. It’s a good option if you want a more laid-back day on the water with a slightly premium feel, and you’re happy not disembarking on Rottnest itself.

Why backpackers love it

If you’ve already done the usual ferry or bike-day version of Rottnest, this gives you a different angle. The small group size makes it feel less crowded, and having snorkelling gear, lunch and marine park fees included helps make the price clearer upfront. It also takes the planning out of a full day on the water, with plenty of time to swim, chill out and enjoy the sail back to Fremantle. Just be aware it’s not a budget pick, and you’ll need moderate mobility to move around the boat safely.

What to expect

After boarding in Fremantle, you’ll sail around 20km offshore to Rottnest Island. The day is fully water based, with time spent in sheltered bays where you can snorkel over coral reefs, swim, use the kayaks or SUPs, or stretch out on the catamaran and take it easy. There’s an indoor saloon if you want a break from the sun, plus morning tea and a buffet lunch provided during the trip. On the sail back, the boat is powered by the afternoon sea breeze known as the Freo Doctor, and you may get the chance to help with the sails or take the helm. Keep in mind that you won’t go ashore, and a swimming waiver is required if you want to join the water activities.
